Historic Court House Renovations
Client: San Juan County
- 1991 Award of Merit, Washington Trust for Historic Preservation
Our work over multiple phases included an initial feasibility study, historic research, programming, engineer’s reports, schematic design and several designs for restoration. Crucial to the design process, a strong attempt was made to preserve as much of the existing building as possible. Existing brickwork and interior woodwork were preserved. The original exterior appearance, east porch, and cornice were restored. New interior finishes, cabinetry, millwork, and furniture all used the original, existing interior finishes as a point of inspiration and reference.
The second phase renovation work carefully recreated the character of the original courtroom on the second floor of the old building. This project received a grant from the State of Washington for the restoration of historic courthouses.
